OK.. after several days of trying to ignore it, I have to ask for clarification lest I misunderstand (it took it from the black, white, grey tantra post):

"3. Seminal flow is stopped to stop flow out of sperm. If anyone masters the practice to have orgasm without sperm is an exalted yogi who enjoys samsara remaining in Nirvana."

I am tempted to interpret as : whoever can orgasm wihout ejaculation is an exalted yogi who enjoys samsara remaining in Nirvana."

I'd like to know what “samsara remaining in Nirvana” refers to I thought there is no samsara in Nirvana.. so nothing to remain... thusly I am tempted to adjust the interpretation:

"whomever can orgasm without ejaculation is an exalted yogi who enjoys samsara"

but that leaves out Nirvana, which I am sure is a big omission..

so should I interpret as:

"whomever can orgasm without ejaculation is an exalted yogi who enjoys an aspect of Nirvana"

if so.. then I got this other thing that does not make sense to me: I, as well as some folks in the tao sex practice tribe, can do just that: orgasm without ejaculation.. but speaking only of myself now: I do not consider myself an exhalted yogi, and I would seriously doubt that I have attain a significant realization of Nirvana.

So I am having a hard time relating that to myself.

Sorry the post is too long, but i am particularly lazy to condense it down to a few sentences..

your thoughts are appreciated.

love it or hate it it sure is an interesting Quote----

There exist three kinds of tantrism: white, black and grey. The schools of White Magic are based in white tantra. The schools of black magic are based in black tantra. The schools of grey tantra are confused, vague; yet lead the aspirant to black tantra.

White tantra is the sexual connection without ejaculation of the ens seminis. Black tantra is the sexual connection with ejaculation of the ens seminis. Grey tantra is the sexual connection in which the ejaculation of the ens seminis sometimes occurs, and sometimes does not.

The schools of regeneration forbid the ejaculation of the ens seminis; the schools of black magic do not forbid the ejaculation of the ens seminis, and even justify (in their way) ejaculation, with phrases and religious sentences.

The Initiates of the tantric schools work with the Hydrogen TI-12 (this is the hydrogen of the sex). This hydrogen is processed in the human organism, in accordance with the laws of the musical octaves, from Do to Ti.

The entire human organism is gestated among the matrix with the notes Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti. The verb, music, originates all creation.

After being intelligently processed within the human organism, the Hydrogen TI-12 (through the Maithuna, without ejaculation of the ens seminis) can receive an additional shock that will put it in the note Do of a second superior octave. Then, after completely saturating all the organic cells, it will crystallize in the splendid form of an independent, luminous and shining body: in the Astral Body of the Adepts and Angels of the Great White Lodge (the Solar Astral Body).

The average human being does not have an Astral Body; he only has the ego that travels through the Astral world during the common state of sleep, and after death. The ego replaces the Astral Body.

Really, the Astral Body is a luxury that very few possess.
We need to transmute the lead into gold; we need to create the Astral Body. This can only be possible with the Hydrogen TI-12.

The Astral Body is controlled by 24 laws and its basic food is the Hydrogen 24. The one who already possesses the Astral Body can place the Hydrogen TI-12 (through sexual transmutation) into the note Do of the third superior octave. Then, the marvelous Hydrogen TI-12 will crystallize in the splendid form of the Mental Body. In this form, the Initiate will have the Christ-Mind of the Gnostic Arhat.

The Mental Body is controlled by 12 laws and its basic food is the Hydrogen 12 of the mind, which must not be confused with the Hydrogen TI-12 of sex (I clarify this in order to avoid confusion).

The mind of the Gnostic Arhat shines marvelously in the world of the Universal Fire; it is the mind that does wonders and prodigies, it is the mind that can do miracles.

Every Initiate in possession of a healthy physical body and the Astral and Mental bodies has to generate an additional shock to the Hydrogen TI-12 (through Sexual Magic, without ejaculation of the ens seminis), in order to pass it to the note Do of a superior octave. Such an action will produce the crystallization of the Hydrogen TI-12 in the form of the body of the Conscious Will. Upon reaching this height, we possess the Superior Existential Bodies of the Being, of the Spirit.

The body of the Conscious Will is referred to in Theosophy as the Causal Body. They mistakenly suppose that all human beings possess it. In truth, only the Adepts of the Great White Lodge possess it. Such a body is controlled by 6 laws and its basic food is the Hydrogen 6.

Only the one who possesses the Superior Existential Bodies of the Being can reach the incarnation of his Divine Immortal Triad (Atman-Buddhi-Manas). Such a one is a true human being, a Master of Major Mysteries of the Great White Lodge.

A White Adept is, of course, the positive crystallization of the Hydrogen TI-12; however, we have to explain that there exist negative crystallizations: the adepts of the black lodge. They also work with the Hydrogen TI-12. They have black sexual tantric rituals. They ejaculate the seminal liquor during the sexual connection. They also project additional shocks to the Hydrogen TI-12, which puts it in musical octaves (inferior to the ones of this world in which we live). Then, the Hydrogen TI-12 crystallizes in the ego, strengthening and developing it with all its tenebrous, submerged, diabolic powers...

In Tibet, the Drugpa Clan practices black tantra. The black initiate Drugpas ejaculate the ens seminis mystically; the Drugpas of the red cap have a fatal system of re-absorbing the ens seminis (charged with feminine atoms) from the very vagina of the woman. With the force of the mind, they re-abosrb it through the urethra, sending it to the brain. In this way, the adepts of the left-hand path pretend to mix the solar and lunar atoms, with the purpose of "awakening the Kundalini." Their intentions are good, but the procedure is bad, because the spilled ens seminis is charged with atoms from the Secret Enemy. The negative consequences of such a procedure is the negative awakening of the Kundalini (the Kundabuffer organ is developed) and the negative crystallization of the Hydrogen TI-12. In the western world, the schools of black tantra hide themselves with talk of the Christ and the Gospels, speaking ineffable things, blessing and mystically spilling the ens seminis. They obtain the same failed results as the Drugpa Clan.

There are thousands of schools that seem to be whiter than the snow, yet are blacker than coal. It is most difficult to recognize the black schools. Their tenebrous instructors, who are demons, pretend to be living Christs, and naturally fascinate their parishioners. One becomes amazed listening to those wolves, dressed in sheep's clothing. Often these sincere, well-intentioned, yet mistaken individuals speak ineffable things and appear charitable and sanctimonious. How can one doubt them, in the presence so much sweetness? How can one doubt their kindness? How can one doubt their tenderness and charity? The most curious aspect is that these adepts of the left-hand path usually speak against black magic (how can one doubt them?); however, they are blacker than coal (this is a terrible problem).

There exist schools of black magic that practice emptying the mind. They want an empty mind without knowing Zen Buddhism, without ever having used a Koan, without ever having studied the science of Pratyahara and the law of mental bipolarity, without knowing the law through which the Essence of the mind is liberated from the battle of the antithesis, in order to mix itself with the Monad and thus reach Satori (illumination).

The fanatical ones of those black schools believe that the empty mind (or better if we say the quietude of the mind) is something as easy as blowing and making bottles, waiting for the moment when the Great Reality will enter in them in order for the animal, bestial entities that form the pluralized "I" to be expelled from them. They want the Divinity to enter into them, without possessing the solar vehicles (those vehicles are only possessed by those who have worked intensely with the Hydrogen TI-12). To try and incarnate the Great Reality without possessing the Solar Vehicles is like wanting to saddle a horse without having the horse. The fanatical ones of those schools want to become conscious of the subconscious, without eliminating the "I" and without even working with the Hydrogen TI-12.

It is frightful to see them falling on the floor, foaming at the mouth, in the middle of epileptic attacks (they are possessed, but think they are doing well). There are as many of them in the Subub, as there are in the spiritualist centers, "Chenrezians," etc.

These poor fanatical ones of the black schools do not want to realize that they are still embryos who do not possess the Astral Body, who instead only have the ego. In the physical world they appear as human beings, while in the molecular region they are merely dreaming, subconscious, cold, and phantasmal shadows. These poor imbeciles ignore that they do not have a Mental Body. They only have the pluralized mental "I" that utilizes the mental substance as a vehicle.

These poor foolish people ignore that they do not have the body of the Conscious Will and that they only possess the force of desire. Such tenebrous, fanatical ones believe that they are demi-gods and that Divinity can express Itself through them, even though they do not have the Superior Existential Bodies of the Being..

The black magicians are one hundred percent lunar. We have to free ourselves from the lunar influence and become solar human beings. We have to work with the Hydrogen TI-12, transmuting it in accordance with the law of the octaves, in order to create the Superior Existential Bodies of the Being. In this way we transform ourselves into authentic and true human beings.

The Schools of Yoga
In these times there is plenty of literature regarding yoga. Groups of yoga appear everywhere. It is necessary to clarify this aspect, for the good of all disciples of the Light. In the Hindustani tradition, there exist seven great schools of yoga, and all of them are useful because they assist as a type of kindergarten to humanity.

There is much that is useful in the schools of Yoga and much that is useless. It is necessary to distinguish between the useful and the useless.

The serious students that have gone to the Hindustan know very well that the best of all those schools, the most transcendental one, is Sex-Yoga, White Tantra.

Hatha Yoga is a type of kindergarten when only practiced for physical purposes, when practiced as a type of gymnastics; however, tantric Hatha Yoga is not a type of kindergarten. In its own right, it is a school of regeneration because it is related with the Maithuna (Sexual Magic) and all the tantric sadanas or wise Sexual Magic positions.

Raja Yoga is a type of kindergarten when it is only related with the chakras or magnetic wheels of the occult anatomy of the human being; but when it is combined with Kundalini Yoga and Sexual Magic, it is no longer a type of kindergarten and, as a fact, becomes a school of regeneration.Jnana Yoga is a type of kindergarten when its main concern is just the mind and its powers; but when it is combined with White Tantra, it is no longer a type of kindergarten, and actually becomes a school of regeneration.

Bhakti Yoga, or the devotional path, is a type of kindergarten when it is only related with devotional practices; but when it is combined with the Maithuna, it no longer is a type of kindergarten. It is then a school of regeneration.

Karma Yoga is a type of kindergarten when it only studies the path of the straight action (in theoretical form), when the devotee is unable to modify the circumstances of life, when the devotee does not possess the Being. Let us remember the one who acts is the Being. The intellectual animal only has the illusion that he does so, when in reality he does nothing: everything happens through him. Only the Being can modify the circumstances of life. In order to have the Being within, it is necessary to practice Sexual Magic, to dissolve the "I," and sacrifice ourselves for humanity.

Laya Yoga is a type of kindergarten when it only works in the field of respiration and meditation. It is no longer a type of kindergarten when it is combined with the Maithuna (Sexual Magic).

Samadhi Yoga is a type of kindergarten when it is not combined with the Maithuna, because the most elevated form of ecstasy is attained with the Maithuna (Sexual Magic).

Those who have traveled through India, Tibet, China, Japan, the Great Tartar, etc., know very well that the most serious form of yoga is found in tantra. In reality, without tantra (Sexual Magic) it is absolutely impossible to reach Initiation.

The exoteric or public circle of every school of yoga is a type of kindergarten. The esotericism, or secret circle of every school of yoga, is not a type of kindergarten, but a school of regeneration.

In ancient times, the Maithuna was taught publicly in all the ashrams of the Hindustan. Unfortunately, the little brothers and sisters were abusive and created scandals. The Gurus of those ashrams had to close the curtain of esotericism, and today the Maithuna is taught only in secret in some ashrams. Such a dramatic decision, made by the Gurus of those ashrams, transformed their ashrams into a type of kindergarten; however, those Gurus practice the Maithuna and teach it to the most prepared (in order to avoid scandals).

In the western world, yoga has not been comprehended correctly, and naturally many infrasexuals have appeared, who hate sex.

Really, yoga without sex, without the Maithuna, is like a garden without water. Yoga without sex is a type of kindergarten, not a school of regeneration. Yoga without the Maithuna cannot Self-realize anyone.

Let us remember the school of Yogananda. We know the Kriya of Yogananda. We have studied it profoundly and it is incomplete. It lacks tantra, it needs the tantra of Tibet. Yogananda did not receive the complete Kriya. For this reason, such a Kriya cannot Self-realize anyone. We are not saying with this that such a Kriya is useless; it is clear that it is useful as a type of kindergarten, and that is all.

It is absurd to adulterate Gnosis, to adulterate the knowledge by putting such a Kriya within the Gnostic Movement (adultery is absolutely forbidden in the Christian gospel).

Really, the Kriya of Yogananda is just a branch of the Laya Kriya, or tantric sadhana of Tibet. Without tantra, such a Kriya is incomplete. Thus no one can attain Self-realization with that Kriya. Not even Yogananda attained Self-realization. Yogananda needs to reincarnate and work with the Maithuna; only in this way will he attain inner Self-realization...

The grave situation with the fanatical ones of infrasexuality is that they are completely convinced that they can attain Self-realization through renouncing sex, or by fornicating.

The Theosophical and pseudo-Rosicrucian schools have made the pseudo-occultist students believe that the intellectual animal already possesses the seven bodies. Such a concept is false. The reality is that due to a lack of cosmic Initiation, the clairvoyants of the Theosophical Society have given deficient information, confusing the astral substance and the ego with the legitimate Astral Body. They have also confused those who mistake the legion of "I's" for the authentic Mental Body, and the Essence or Buddhata for the Causal body, etc. In this way, and with such hypotheses in the mind, it is clear that the fanatical ones of yoga, pseudo-esotericism or pseudo-occultism, etc., have not comprehended the necessity of creating the inner bodies (they believe that they already have them, due to misinformation).

If they could profoundly comprehend the inner bodies and based themselves in the Law of the Philosophical Analogies, they would work with the Maithuna or Sexual Magic, because they would comprehend that "as beyond, so below" - if with the sexual act we engender children, then (by the Law of Analogies) with that same act we engender the inner bodies.

Unfortunately, our pseudo-occultist brethren are terribly misinformed. Ignorance is the mother of all errors...

A tantric healer once said to me that anything done with consciousness is spiritual… The way I see it, ultimately at a big picture level everything is spiritual, but in this context, my belief is anything done with consciousness/ awareness and love is spiritual. I could murder someone with awareness, but is this spiritual? Not in my definition…

He also said that the shadow shakti is everything you would like to do sexually if your head didn’t get in the way… to me the head in this context is the ego and so doing everything you would like to do, expressing yourself as you are drawn, creating what you want to create, without the ego or unconscious beliefs that don’t serve you getting in the way, is the spirit expressing, experiencing and being truth.. not the shadow.

I am wondering if what he really mean is that the shadow is sexual expression at the base chakra level. But, the way I see it, if base chakra sexuality is done with love, (unconditional, as opposed to romantic) consciousness, and mutual respect/consent, that is not the shadow but the spirit having an experience… Expression at the base chakra level without awareness, love or respect, including going into addiction and abuse, to me would be the shadow…

The way I see it, we are it all, light and shadow, we have within us the potential to be and do it all, from the highest expression of love to the darkest expression of fear… I do not believe in evil, only fear… the darkest of human potential and expression comes from fear.

To me, the shadow is the part of us that is fear based. The part of us that is so easy to cut off from and deny and through denial project onto others…As long as we are aware of all parts of us, accept and embrace all parts of us, as they arise, we can work with the shadow to evolve and grow. The more darkness in ourselves we embrace, understand and love, the more we can be and experience light and the more compassion and acceptance we can have for others… but awareness and acceptance of the shadow doesn’t mean we have to become the shadow…

It is when we deny the shadow parts of ourselves that we are in danger of becoming the shadow, and it is in becoming the shadow (ie identifying more with the ego than the spirit/ expressing the shadow without consciousness) that lies our highest potential to harm ourselves and others.

The more we repress, suppress and deny our shadow aspects the more chance that part of us will explode out in harmful expression. Eg The priest who denies the part of himself that is a sexual being with sexual desires, becomes the child molester, or, the victim of abuse who denies their own potential to abuse, unconsciously becomes the abuser.

Accepting, embracing, acknowledging and loving all parts, all aspects of our humanness, the light and the dark, to me, is the key to love and wholeness… after all white light is not an absence of colour, but made up of all colours…

Their "general conclusion" (in the above article) is that
mental illness is not "so genetic" and most likely due
to toxic chemical exposures.....
Here is an excerpt from the "introduction" of
a UCSF research article;

Over the past decade, it has become clear that the brain
synthesizes steroid hormones by using some of the same
steroidogenic enzymes found in adrenals and gonads
(reviewed in refs. 1 and 2). These compounds were given
the name neurosteroids (3), and some of their functions
have been elucidated (4).

The above excerpt is from:

I just wanted to share a gradual shift I've noticed in my own sexuality. Feel free to share your experiences or to offer comments.
The nature of my enjoyment of intercourse has changed quite a bit. When I was in my 20's and 30's, once I entered, there was no way I could stop without ejaculating. And then, at the instant I began to ejaculate, I had to stop moving. The sensation was so intense that any further motion was painful. Perhaps it was young hormones at work.

Then, through my mid- to late forties, it became possible and sometimes felt preferable to stop after making love for a while, and not ejaculate. That opened up a new enjoyment of lovemaking. Instead of frantic, unstoppable urgency, going for the big O, there is a more suble, gentle, peaceful enjoyment of simply being in intercourse, moving slowly, and being present with my partner. There is time to savor every sensation, along every millimeter of movement, to notice textures, subtle warming and cooling, and the wonders of loving touch throughout my body and not just on my penis. With the urgency to come gone, lovemaking can go on literally for hours at a nice plateau of pleasure and connection.

Lovemaking feels more sacred to me this way than it used to, but of course one can also bring sacredness to raw, primal, lusty lovemaking as well. It's all about presence and connection.

I find it interesting that there is such a recurrence of polyamory mentioned in these groups. I am a significantly enlightened individual. The things I have been taught and shown are truly another conversation. As an enlightened being I can tell you that I run a night club and meet tons of people every week. I can also say that I have not met one person in the past year that is capable of having sex. That is, in accordance with the heavens. Sexuality requires a certain level of evolution. Tantra specifically is not an exercise one can have with anyone. It requires a relationship of COMPLETE inward and outward honesty. This is something few human beings are capable of.

4 years ago I met a man. A soul mate with whom I had such a profound bond that I came to realize that all sexuality is misplaced. Born of an innate imbalance and thoroughly useless. Bare in mind, I have self esteem and am very openminded sexually. But when I found what sex is for, I realized how ridiculous it is to pursue it the way EVERYONE does. I do not judge others and I am willing to meet a polyamorist that can pass my skills of observation as a balanced individual. I have never seen it. To have sex with someone is to completely honor the entirety of their being. To live from infinite source. If you are not one with infinite Source, nothing you do is balanced, so sex is always going to be innately self destructive, whether you see it or not. Every action one takes from imbalance is innately destructive. That destruction is meant to lead one back to the source. It's natural selection.

Sanskrit vs. Tibetan mantras

Having recited and translated Tibetan sadhanas for many years, though admittedly with no real experience of them, I have observed innumerable mantras of all different sorts. The Tibetan lamas I have asked all have various explanations of their functions, usually following classical scriptural commentaries on different types of mantras, but I have heard very little information regarding their actual function and how they accomplish that function, in practical terms.

It seems that, according to the view prevalent among Tibetan practitioners of mantra, exact pronunciation is of little importance. What is important, is the devotion exercised while reciting the mantra. This is usually exemplified by the story of the Tibetan Kilaya practitioner who lost his powers when he followed the advice on proper pronunciation given to him by an Indian scholar. But if the mantras are only a support for devotion, then wouldn’t it be mostly irrelevant what syllables one is chanting? And why then the need for so many millions of mantras? Has anyone noticed the prevalent insanity of striving for maximum quantity thereby sacrificing most quality rendering the practice not only largely ineffective, but even harmful. (When one curses tantric practices for being so foolish and ineffective and leaves to go and at least have some fun in samsara.)

Now, on the other side of the Himalayas, Indian sources say that mantras should be pronounced perfectly, and that the resonance thereby generated affects the subtle energies in the practitioner’s neurological system. To me, this sounds much more reasonable and scientific than the blind-faith system promoted by the Tibetans. I always imagined that Buddhism would be a very scientific and rational system, until leaving the Tibetans after many years disappointed. To be fair, so long the bhakti for a real master was there, the Tibetan practices were effective. Unfortunately that bhakti could not survive the trap of the Tibetan scholastic system into which I was put, against my wishes, which gave huge emphasis on intellectual speculation while discouraging meditation (!!!). Suffering a terrible broken heart, I departed from my Tibetan masters to find methods that might be effective in relieving the sufferings of a great sinner.

Can someone please clarify the apparent discrepancy between these two systems of mantra recitation? Furthermore, can someone clarify the spelling, pronunciation, meaning, and intended neurological effects of mantras such as:

OM/AUM
A / AH
HUM/HUNG
SOTI/SWASTI
SOHA/SWAHA
PHAT

This has been posted concurrently in the Tibetan Buddhism tribe, to receive responses from both quarters.

Desire is not the Problem, Dualistic Identity Is

Excerpts from Troma Rigtsal Rinpoche’s upcoming book,
MahaSiddha Buddhism

Seemingly never-ending, unrelenting, seductive, distracting, debilitating; oh, the ebb and flow of Desire. Rumors abound that only the most realized, hard-core, radical, fanatical, warrior-hero Buddhists could ever dare work with it. But is Desire really such a problem? Desire is the radiance of Buddha-nature, our wakefulness to the sparkling, sacred qualities of existence. We glow with it. Our world is lit up when we are in it. In the surge of desire, we feel alive, tantalized and joyous. How then could it go so wrong at times? How then could it gain the reputation as being the bane of a Buddhist’s existence? To understand the answer, we must venture into the understanding of dualism and non-duality, the heart of the MahaSiddha’s Buddhism. The fundamental teaching is that most people live their lives in a state of dissatisfaction (dukha) caused by misperception of what we are. When we misperceive our own mind, we misperceive others, our world and all of reality. And in this misperception we find awkwardness and dissatisfaction at best.

Mistaken Identity

Imagine if you thought you were a tuba - imagine how this would complicate your life. People would try to feed you and you’d think, “tubas do not need food.” So you would not eat. Your lover would try to kiss you and as soon as their lips hit your “mouthpiece” you would blare out with your loud, low tuba sounds. Of course, this would make relationships difficult. Misunderstanding what we are is a serious mistake.

If you thought you were a plum and you were really a banana, trying to be more purple and round, more plum, more tart - imagine the awkwardness. Perhaps you would tighten up, knotting up your insides to mimic a plum’s seed and cover up how soft your long, white belly really was. You might try to act more like a plum and avoid expressing those embarrassing banana sentiments. Meanwhile, with all your efforts to be a plum, you might be plagued with shame and confusion about your inability to completely hide your big yellow peel and feathery, white flesh. Our attempt to be the plum would only make our existence as a banana much more complicated than it needs to be. Misperceiving what we are is a grave error that causes us to fall into all kinds of dissatisfaction, confusion and even all out suffering. Our mistaken identity in dualism is as ill-fitting (dukha) as thinking we are a plum or a tuba. It is a subtle but serious mistake that distorts our every experience.

How Desire Could Be Twisted

Our capacity for enjoyment quickly fades and our desire becomes twisted if we manipulate it to prove we are something we’re not. For example, we may think it is imperative to be a plum and therefore we need to be more purple, plum-like and juicy to be satisfied. We believe the way to satisfaction is in being a plum. We start looking for what is missing. A mixture of desire and grasping arise in a tidal wave as we fantasize about our future as a plum. We realize we need purple pants to cover up our yellow peel. We long for those pants, we day-dream about them and invest time in finding the exact right pair. We try them on and think about how great it will feel to finally be a plum. Finally, we get the purple pants, squat and roll around and do everything we can to be a plum. But something is still missing. There is still a problem – but it isn’t desire that is the problem, nor is it the object of desire that is the problem. Purple pants are not problematic by nature. They are quite enjoyable unto themselves, they are what they are. It is only when we are trying to manipulate them to disguise what we really are that a problem arises. Purple pants cannot do that. Objects of desire cannot provide the fixed, “good” self that the dualistic habit pursues. Nothing can hide our banana-nature, so life gets very tedious and unsatisfying when we let desire get tangled up in our dualistic identity.

If we misperceive what we are, we misperceive everything else, including desire and the objects of desire. Then instead of having desire properly and fully, we confuse desire and attempt to manipulate it to serve our mistaken identity. The piece of chocolate is no longer just a piece of chocolate, it becomes a way of drugging ourselves so that we don’t have to face our own insecurity. It becomes a way to avoid emptiness, the open-ended, insecure nature of what we are. The chocolate fails to do this of course, thus that desire leads to frustration. So also, relationship fails to makes us feel secure. Work we have done fails to prove we are the “good” self. Everything we have desired only fails us when what we are really wanting is not the object of desire. When the hidden motivation is establishing some ideal Self, the objects of desire doesn’t provide it. That is dualism, forever disappointing. Trying to establish Self is a futile pursuit, since what we are is too open-ended to be captured in fixed form. That is the "me" project that brings us so much suffering as we attempt to establish an identity made up of dualistic fantasies. It is dualistic because it is form based, the Self we want to find is imagined to be some permanent, definite, secure Self, divided from the temporary, ambiguous, insecure reality of life.

Every person wants to be loved for “who they are,” what if we also loved the objects of desire in this way? What if we enjoyed things for what they really are; lacking the security or confirmation, temporary and ineffable; as empty as we are. All objects of desire give us no solid ground to stand on, and we don't have take issue with that. We can enjoy phenomena as is. Then desire is just simple minded delight. Nothing more, nothing less.

Contacting What We Are Directly

Meditation is a method for contacting what we are directly. We can observe and become intimate with what we are. We discover moments where we are not relying on reference points to deduce what we are. We have the direct experience. Our attempts to prove we are “good” or disprove that we are “bad” through referencing how we measure up to plum-ness, tuba-ness or dualism has less meaning. What we actually are becomes directly apparent. Then desire is what it is. No more, no less, it is as pure and innocent as primordial existence. We can want the cake and eat it too. There is nothing un-buddhist about that. We can enjoy the cake even more, because we can eat the cake without the confusion of trying to use the cake to take away our anxiety, or give us the happiness or confirmation. It is just cake. We eat it as it is, with the calories, pleasure and the vivid emptiness that pervades all forms.

Desire can be as enlightening as it could be poisonous. Like everything, it could be the opportunity for waking up or confusion, based on our understanding of our own mind. We have all heard about the monastic path of renouncing desire. Who couldn’t appreciate the potency in that? Most adults have followed desire into neurosis at one time or another, but it is not the only direction we could go with desire. We could be in it and find liberation. Desire will only ever point to the non-dual nature of things if we do not try to forge a Self with it.

The MahaSiddhas

"Know that desire and covetousness are Discriminating
Awareness - You will find fine sensory distinction in no
other place than a mind hungering for beautiful things,
wanting the whole world. Look into the intrinsic
freshness of your desire and there is boundless light!"
-Yeshe Tsogyal, Sky Dancer

Motivated by revenge a king tried to corrupt the MahaSiddha of the Bell, by sending a woman to seduce him. Instead of being corrupted by desire, he was enlightened. Within passion, desire, love and companionship, he found the final ingredient to go beyond ignorance. The MahaSiddha called the Glutton was not told to go on a diet. On the contrary, he was instructed to increase his appetite to extend to all phenomena. When desire is liberated from the confines of dualistic identity, it is a raw appreciation that connects us with the living energy of all things. If we set down our dualistic obsession with trying to be other than as we are, then Desire is not a problem. A banana can enjoy appreciating plums. A person can enjoy a tuba. We don’t need to renounce them, unless of course that is our cup of tea. We only need liberate our grasping at dualistic identity to enjoy our world with awareness.

Disclaimer: Buddhism is a tradition of methods for awakening. The Buddha introduced 84,000 different methods that may seem contradictory because of their differences, but are each appropriate according to the specific individuals and stages of the path for which they are intended. This article is written from the perspective of the Inner Tantras. It does not address the relationship with desire taken by renunciate or monastic practitioners who take a different view as a method for awakening.

Learn how to process the emotional material lovers release
when you finger their inner recesses in tantric ritual.

When you explore a Receiver's yoni or base chakra with your
fingers, the Receiver may block pleasure, orgasm and ejaculation. If
the Receiver tenses, numbs or burns at the internal touch at specific
places within her or his body, encourage Receiver to free associate,
to remember touch, sex and times that traumatized or closed her or
him down emotionally and sexually. She or he may even have past life
memories or fantasies as you hold the internal point.

If the Receiver yells, cries, laughs or makes strange sounds,
say,"Let your feelings out." Hold Receiver while she or he screams,
sobs and says what s/he needs to say to each person she thinks hurt
or neglected her. If she's angry at you, say, "Express it louder.
Let me know how mad I make you." Stay centered.

CATHART CONTEMPORARY CONTRATEMPS

If Receiver, while you touch her or his inner recesses,
remembers a person or situation in her or his current or recent life,
help her or him experience the immediacy and intensity her of his
organismic reaction to the person or situation by addressing the
person or situation in the here and now. .

If your Receiver experiences thoughts and emotions toward
someone who is physically absent, bring the absent person into the
Receiver's foreground here-and-now. Tell the Receiver to speak aloud
to the absent other as though the person s/he thought of were
present.

Tell your receiver: "Invoke the absent person you thought of
as I touch you here in your yoni [or base chakra]; say the person's
name aloud. Imagine s/he sits before you.

Then identify with the absent person you invoked. Assume her
or his emotional state.

Roleplay him or her and state your existence. Say what, as
s/he, you're like.

Be yourself again and tell her or him what you've withheld–
didn't say enough before.

Express your resentments, demands and appreciations to the
absent person.

Again, change roles; become the absent other and reply.

Alternate being yourself and the absent person..

REPROGRAM CHILDHOOD, ADOLESCENT OR EARLIER ADULT LIMITS

Again, change roles; become the absent other and reply..

Alternate being yourself and the absent person.
.
Ask Receiver to fantasize and roleplay redoing the painful,
humiliating or inappropriate scenes that traumatized her or him; keep
your fingers lightly on the area that stimulated catharsis.

Enact the part of her or his father, mother or lover the way
Receiver wished they were in the scene she or he recalled.

When s/he relaxes again, move your fingers to and from the
area that stimulated the painful memories and an area that felt good
when touched. Let your fingers stimulate these two areas till she
says she enjoys touch both places.

RESCRIPT PASTLIVES

If the Receiver images her- or himself or another figure with
whom she or he identifies in another body, another time, ask her or
him to recount and experientially relive the main events of this
pastlife. Tell Receiver. "Express your thoughts and feelings."

If s/he gets darkness, or no visions, say, "Imagine that
means you died. Replay the story, just before it darkens." Tell
Receiver, "Forgive yourself and anyone you resented."

Tell Receiver, "Say your last words and thoughts, then relive
your death." Then, "Separate from the body. As the separated soul,
feel peace. Rejoin loved ones who already died. Float with them
toward a light.

"Meet the karma committee and your guide. They review the
lessons you learned in that life. They tell you how to bring the
lessons of that life into this one."

Let us know on this site how exploring a receiver's inner
recesses helped them open up and transcend their limitations.

TRANSCENDENTAL ORGASM by Janet Kira Lessin
Relationships, Orgasms and Enlightenment - Entry for May 28, 2008

I wrote this 4 days ago. My life's so hectic, I haven't had much time
to blog. I love writing. Anyway, in between phone calls and people
coming into the office, I managed to write the following:

I journal every morning when I awaken. I guess I was more deeply
affected by the couple we worked with yesterday than I imagined. My
husband and I are relationship counselors. We work with singles and
groups. But most of our clients are couples.

A lot of couples have sexual issues. Many love each other, have
families or have built lives together that are complicated and
intricately entwined. But after a while, resentments, unresolved
emotional and psychological issues and withholds seem to deeply
affect sexuality and eventually lovemaking lessens or falls to the
wayside altogether.

I felt especially sorry for this couple. The woman had never had an
orgasm. Her lack of orgasm was extremely disheartening for both of
them.

A small amount of our female clients have never had an orgasm. Some
may have orgasmed once or twice, but have great difficulty achieving
orgasm at will. Some cannot orgasm during intercourse. Others can't
orgasm with stimulation by their partner and the woman is the only
one who can bring herself to orgasm. Sometimes she can only do so
with a vibrator.

When sexual union doesn't lead to orgasms for both partners, couples
feel great pain, hurt, guilt, anquish and frustration that often
erodes the relationship eventually leading partners to infidelity
which creates further separation and could eventually result in
divorce.

Some couples stay together and deny the importance of sexuality for
themselves and the relationship. Occassionally, couples seek more
modern options, like polyamory or swinging to subsidize and offset
their sexual needs. Mature, more conscious couples can make those
types of options work.

Tantra combined with psychotherapy helps women explore their history
to uncover the origins of their sexual dysfunction. Rape, incest,
molestation, cultural conditioning, pastlife scripts, religious
programming, shaming, blaming and imprinting often are the roots of
sexual disconnection and body dissociation.

The body holds trauma on a cellular level. A good tantric
psychotherapist can help couples overcome these issues and create a
happier, healthier sex life and relationship.

Saturday, May 24, 2008 - REFLECTIONS ON MY TRANSCENDENTAL ORGASMS
We did a session with a couple. The woman has NEVER had an orgasm.
Wow, that has to be frustrating. My orgasm takes me to unity
consciousness experiences. I feel my oneness with the ones involved
with my orgasm, either those connected with me directly, physically,
and those in the room. The veil drops, the curtain parts and I stand
before my Creator and WE ARE ONE. I feel ONE with all that IS, WAS,
WILL BE. I am outside time and space while simultaneously all that
there is. I am the IS-NESS OF IT ALL.

Then I sub-parse, separate, so it seems, to being me. Yet from this
state, I retain my connection with ALL and realize I have NEVER been
apart. Nor will I ever be apart. Yet as the glory of the
orgasm/orgiastic state begins to fade, I devolve, so it seems, to my
Ego Self and begin to doubt, on some level, the unity experience I
just experienced. Such is the power of the Veil and the desire of the
Ego to be truly ALONE with ITSELF. Its sense of importance and
independence is so interwoven with the idea of being separate, being
important, individually that it protects itself with shields of
memories and forgetting.

Yet, there's a point of internalization when the dance between Ego
and Oneness is so purely defined, no matter how hard the Ego Self
attempts to hide and cover up the Oneness phase, the soul remains
connected to WHOLENESS and thus achieves the first level of
consciousness.

Now what? I am aware of higher levels. So I continue to be drawn to
these Unity Experiences so that I can become totally conscious and
aware and assist my fellow souls, my humans, humanity, as they cry so
clearly. I hear you. I am here to help you, help me, help ALL become
enlightened.

How Do You Orgasm? What's your orgasmic peak? What're your methods
of reaching unity consciousness connectiong with yourself and others
tantrically? Share on this site.

I have issues with Spiritual Sexuality as it is commonly conceived and generally practiced.
The reason that sexuality is the perfect sacrament is its utter simplicity. The simplicity of sex mirrors perfectly the simplicty of Spirit, thus it aligns an open vertical channel for ascent towards Spirit from Matter (Mysticism) and for the descent of Spirit into Matter (Magick). Thus, to elaborate upon the action is to pollute its simplicity. There is still some discomfort with sex in general, and I see much of this in contemporary Spiritual Sexuality. Do we need to ritualize or somehow cleanse sex for it to be the sacrament? Or do we need to simply recognize what it is?
Due to our basic discomfort with sex, we have trouble approaching it directly, as its own unique and fundamental form of Love. Those engaging in casual sex or sports fucking generally deal with this basic discomfort withegoism and callousness, thus obstructing their openess to the subtle energies at hand. Likewise, the moralist set up all sorts of repressive complexes between themselves and the energy at hand. The romantic sentimentalist completely encrusst it in self-centered emotionality. I also accuse (most) Spiritual Sex people of generating thought constructs to insert between themselves and the naked energy of sex.
Don't get me wrong, I wholeheartedly love massage, bathing, long foreplay and all of the various methods handed to us by our brothers and sisters in the East. I enjoy the occult role-playing and use of hermaneutics. These are all skills that enhance our awareness of the subtle energies at hand, and give us precise skill in sexuality. I suppose what I dislike, and what I often see is the elaborations of tantra, being draped over the energy of sex, whether the emphasis is upon technique, ritual, attitude or "spiritual mood."
I really, really like the word "fuck.' It is so commonplace now, but when referring to sex, it stills gets a shock. Some figure it refers to something particularly shallow, as in "do you make love or fuck." If so, then the disgust for the term is understandable. But I use it in the sense that I once heard a semi-drunken woman on the bus use it, when she bragged most audibly, "My man can fuck, and I mean fuuuuck!"
On one hand, though this woman and her man might have very intense experiences in their union, it doesn't mean that their minds are trained to cut through the mere sensuality to acutely apprehend the subtle energy of those experiences. On the other hand, in seeking to "transform sex" into a meditative experience, how many lose that raw authenticity that that couple has? I think much of the shiver that the word fuck gets in reference to sex, comes from the sudden confrontation with that which is so raw and authentic in oursleves.
To me, the Arts are an arsenal of means, but never the goal itself. To me, the real path of Spiritual Sexuality is to master all of the skills of mind, energy and body, but to then channel all of those into what is really most essential, most simple, most truly inspired and alive with energy, which is abandon in robust, even savage, fucking.
The mind must be able to penetrate sensuality and egoism, to clearly apprehend the subtle energy of sex. How much more refined we must be to use the state of orgasm for self-recognition. One must be able to control energy and breath. One must have the ability to endure the bliss of the Lotus to thoroughly please the Priestess and thus make the appropriate offering to Aphrodite. One must have knowledge of aspiration, ascent, meditation on the subtle channels and plexi, and invokation or drawing down. But moreover, one must be able have these things become second nature, like driving a stick, when it comes to the rite itself.
This is where our turning to East is limited, and we might want to look to our Pagan roots and to the African and the rustics for their Magick...their Mojo. Or we migfht just want to look into ourselves honestly. The raw ooga booga is the energy we seek. The shakti is embedded into matter in concentration, as the final act of emanation, and this is the kunda. This kunda then drives us as the subliminal sex drive, the procreative urge. To tap into it is the purpose of sex magick. It is like a dragon. Its nature is spiritual fire. its appropriate right then is of vigorous and impassioned abandon ...total immersion in the rite. Let the Wild Rompus Begin!!!
Anyone into dancing knows we easily enter into a tranquil space in vigorous and spontaneous motion. The sexual rite is no different, the more robust and exertive is the core of the rite. The higher aloft one might soar into more and more refined realms of Spiritual Light and Sound, the deeper one might settle into ones own Empty-Mind. The observation of good temple ettiquette is fine for the candle-light dinner phase of the rite, but has no value when it comes to delivering the proper rogering on the dining room table.
I am a man, thus I address men specifically...but the same goes for you ladies! Is the Queen of Existence a mellow dreamy hippie chick? At times, ..yes, she is! Thankfully so!! But the dakinis are wrathful in union, with blades in hand. Kali ma cut Shivas head off she went so berserk! Release that She-Devil. Bite and claw and scream like a banshee! Make his head explode...challenge his Noble and Chivalrous ability to hold his load according to his Will, challenge it to the limit. Be merciless in your own craft.
Well, okay, it is a matter of giving oneself to the fires of the kunda along with the spontaneous movements of the body. There is always a Grace then; no need to sacrifice elegance, or take any particular idiom as the Way.
In terms of Magick, the proper wizard or sorceress engages the whole of the cosmos in the magick, unites the micro and macrocosms. While that which is most refined in us rises aloft to bathe in the Brilliant Nirvanic, the physical must be left to the care of the Daimonic. Let the Cthonic hungers and firey whirlwinds feed upon your form, expend all of your energy upon feeding the most bestial, demoic hunger for carnal ecstasy, and send the soul aloft until life and death are merged in the pinnacle of orgasm, and abide in this for as long as possible, until the demons are glutted and the body exhausted, and then let the Spirit (which is You,) descend anew to resurrect the flesh, and fill the material with the Divine Will. Too much Spiritual Sexuality seems to want to cut Hekate out the deal, to have her call back her dogs. This is where the whole white paths and dark paths trip screws everybody up. Then they call those out of their catagorizations, grey paths. Please. How infantile. The art of Theurgy and of Tantra is to fully engage the entire spectra of energies, to fully conect the material with the spiritual, with all strata of daemonic, animal, and angelic (or high daemonic) energies and intelligences in on the game. The daemonic is just nature, and the daemons are troublesome only when out of the proper niches. In theurgy, they are brought in within their true niche, dancing harmoniously to the music of their celestial parents, and these in turn to the Gods, or your True Immortal Self.
There is no war between Gods and Demons. Or rather the only actual War is inside their own schizoid world-view. This is what so much myth describes, is the minds of the myth-makers, with sparks of Universal Truth here and there, as would be the case. The Great Cosmic War, which is ever seen to play out here, is just in their minds, their own conflicted and dichotomized approach to their own being. If it does plays out in this world, (and it does every day)...then it is due to this schizoid mindset. Mythos of Monotheism and of all the exoteric religions of the east, all describe this schism.
So, the true esoteric initiate understands that the energies of the cosmos are a harmonious continuum, the pain and suffering of our lives coming from an inharmonious preception of this continuum: dualism, in a nut shell. The religious sorts are all about elevating from the animal and getting the animal to follow the rules set by the intellect. The complete wizard or sorceress is all about having a complete, two way circuit between matter and spirit, and that circuit is ones own life. In abiding in this harmony, the process of the loftier principles governing the "lower" is just a fact. But it is spontaneous in the order of our being. Each genature in our being and in our environs is allowed to act accordinf to its own nature. Each self is a vast Kingdom, and the God-Self is the Queen or King thereof. But this doesn't mean it is a dictatorship, a repessive and over legislated dystopia! The magician is a free kingdom of happy citiznes and, with this, she or he battles the repressive vision of the schizoid religious weirdos.
In the rite, apply ones disciplines to set the parameters of the big party to which all of creation is invited. Organize oneself and energy with yoga and ritual, IF it behooves to do so. (In time, I have found that the daemonic energies learn the basic house rules and there is little need for specific preparation, as the rite itself is complete, and practice therein is the best practice for more of it). But once the party is started, one wants all of the energies to be free to celebrate accordingly. Then, the dragon fire just energizes everything at all levels, according the nature of each aspect. The carnal feast grows frenzied and ferocious, as the angels glide upward in melodic serenity, lifted by the warm air from below until they are pulled from the gravitation of Spiritual Sun. As one melts into the sun, and becomes the Soul-Light Itself, then the bliss rains down upon the body and the blessings rain down upon the world. When the feast is sated, and the Hounds of Hekate slump on the porch, ready to nap, then Descend upon the Rays and bring pure energy to the Scene, be the dawn light. When the energies refresh, they are most cooperative and eager to be productive, they respond to your will as flowers lean to sunlight....but still they will grow hungry again, and the enthusiasm for the next feast grows with the hunger.

Is it possible to maintain a Tantric attitude at the moment that the vice is being committed on her? And what would be a Tantric attitude towards the vice, and towards the person committing it?

I am reading "Desire: the Tantric Path to Awakening" by Daniel Odier. He speaks about being fully present to reality through sensorality. Indeed, I can see how developing a raw, non-judgmental, spontaneous consciousness would ultimately result in a nearly orgasmic lust for life... in a neutral environment. But some unfortunate people experience daily torture, pain, suffering, and cruelty. And their physical, emotional, and spiritual senses transmit a completely different reality to the consciousness... Unless one puts up mental blocks, being fully present to the moment means surrenduring to suffering. Is Tantra only applicable in the pre- and post- traumatic states, as a rebalancing/healing attitude?
Our Tantra Temple on Maui, Hawaii, (officially designated the Tantra Theosophical and Gaia-Worshiping Society of the Divine Human Family) can now receive tax-free donations (www.tantratheosophicalsociety.com) and recognize branches at other locales.
them and help her find creative ways to express them.

Talk straight with love to her; tell her your truth.

Verbally sanctify sex. Select words that revere sexual organs and
acts. Yoni (sacred space) for vagina, honoring (cunnilingus), rosebud
(anus), drapes (vaginal lips), polish her pearl (clitoral honoring).
Create your own poetic sex words.

Chakra 6: BRAIN: VISION, INTUITION, INTELLECT

To honor her sixth chakra, recognize her Intellect and inner
Psychic as subselves.

Solicit her visions for herself, you, her friends, community and
world. Intuit each other's thoughts and feelings. Suggest she meld
minds with your kids, parents and friends and let dreams, past life
images, fantasies guide her.

Chakra 7: CROWN: UNITY CONSCIOUSNESS

Celebrate the wider perspectives of her crown chakra in continuing
awareness of the wisdom of chakras 1-6. Encourage her, and join her
in encompassing more than your own subselves. Tarry with her as she
expands her awareness to more than her skin-encapsulated body. Be
with her as she expands your perspective to everyone and everything
everywhere at all-times.

FEEL ALL CHAKRA TOGETHER

Face her in yab/yum (her legs over your hips, your genitals touching hers). Look in her left eye, as she looks into yours. Feel the whole vortex of consciousness within you as a single, integrated fountain rushing through base, sexual, power, love, clarity and spiritual centers.

Then experience unity with her; the seamless web of consciousness
that links the manifest universe. together, let you and she merge
with the latent--unformed but always arising--metacosmic void. You
and she identify with divine play that can manifest all forms. You
and she infuse all chakras with the radiant joy of your spiritual
chakra.

Meditate in silence for several minutes, then kiss.

What is kundalini?

``Kundalini'' literally means coiling, like a snake. In the classical literature of hatha yoga kundalini is described as a coiled serpent at the base of the spine. The image of coiling, like a spring, conveys the sense of untapped potential energy. Perhaps more meaningfully kundalini can be described as a great reservoir of creative energy at the base of the spine.
It's not useful to sit with our consciousness fixed in our head and think of kundalini as a foreign force running up and down our spine. Unfortunately the serpent image may serve to accentuate this alien nature of the image. It's more useful to think of kundalini energy as the very foundation of our consciousness so that when kundalini moves through our bodies our consciousness necessarily changes with it.

The concept of kundalini can also be examined from a strictly psychological perspective. From this perspective kundalini can be thought of as a rich source of psychic or libidinous energy in our unconscious.

In the classical literature of Kashmir Shaivism kundalini is described in three different manifestions. The first of these is as the universal energy or para-kundalini. The second of these is as the energizing function of the body-mind complex or prana-kundalini. The third of these is as consciousness or shakti-kundalini which simultaneously subsumes and intermediates between these two. Ultimately these three forms are the same but understanding these three different forms will help to understand the differerent manifestations of kundalini.

What is the difference between prana and kundalini? What is the difference between qi (or chi) and kundalini?

First let us try to relate to concepts from the same tradition - prana and kundalini. Prana has been translated as the ``vital breath'' and ``bio-energetic motility''; it is associated with maintaining the functioning of the mind and body. Kundalini, in its form as prana-kundalini, is identical to prana ; however, Kundalini also has a manifestations as consciousness and a as a unifying cosmic energy. One could ascribe these same aspects to prana as well so past a certain point these become distinctions without differences.

From the subjective standpoint of an individual actually experiencing the awakening of kundalini I have found three completely different opinions:

The first opinion is that a pranic awakening is only a prelude to a full kundalini awakening. Tibetan yogins that I have encountered consider the activation of prana (Tibetan: rlung) as merely a prerequisite for the activation of kundalini (Tibetan: gTummo). What's attractive about this viewpoint is that it explains the difference between the experience of simply having pleasant sensations in the spine and the much more powerful experience of having a ``freight-train''-like full kundalini experience.

The second opinion, espoused by Swami Shivom Tirth for example, is that prana and kundalini are absolutely equivalent and that it is not meaningful in any way to describe a difference between kundalini rising and prana rising. When posed with question as to how to distinguish between pleasant sensations that show some pranic-activity in the spine and the much more powerful experience Swami Shivom Tirth said that the difference is not in the nature of the activity but in the consciousness that observes it. If the consciousness that experiences the pranic activity is seated within the spine (or more correctly, the central channel, known as the sushumna), then the experience is felt much more powerfully.

The third opinion, espoused by the modern hatha yogin, Desikaran, is that pranic awakening is the true experience to be aimed for and kundalini is actually an obstruction. Desikaran sees the kundalini as a block in the central channel and thus the kundalini must be ``killed'' to make way for the prana. This is the most unusual view of the three.

The Chinese concept of qi (or chi) can be safely identified with the Indian concept of prana.

If all this seems confusing - don't worry, you're in good company. My conclusion is that these are all different terminologies for dealing with a common set of experiences. Any one of these viewpoints is adequate for describing the full range of experiences. What is probably more relevant is to distinguish two different experiences which are often confused. In one an individual experiences some pleasant energizing electric energy running along the spine. This experience itself brings about a wide range of experiences and results in vitality and sensitivity.

Another very distinct experience is the experience of kundalini entering the sushumna and rising up the spine. As soon as kundalini enters the sushumna this experience will completely overwhelm ordinary waking consciousness. From the moment that kundalini enters the sushumna there will no longer be a distrinction between the subjective consciousness which experiences and the object of experience. This experience much more profoundly transfigures consciousness.

If kundalini is universal, why do some kundalini yogins seem to have more kundalini-energy than others?

It's an intriguing question. If an individual's kundalini is viewed as simply a personal reservoir of a cosmic energy then why would one person appear to have more of a reservoir of kundalini energy than another? Nevertheless, this does appear to be the case. This is probably another advantage of the viewpoint that prana (or qi) is the same as kundalini.
Some Chinese texts distinguish between ``innate qi'' or ``pre-natal qi'' that one is born with and ``cultivated qi'' that can be developed. Clearly some people simply have more ``innate qi.'' This manifests as a stronger more resilient body and greater general vitality.

Through training those that have relatively weak ``innate qi'' may surpass those who have strong ``innate qi'' but do not train. There are many stories in the Chinese literature of Qi Gong about people who took up Qi Gong in order to improve their poor health became powerful martial artists or great qi gong masters. Of course those that have strong ``innate qi'' and also train their qi may develop the strongest qi of all.

What does kundalini have to do with spiritual enlightenment? What is the goal of kundalini yoga?

First we need a few concepts: In yogic anatomy the sushumna is the central channel and conduit for the kundalini energy that runs along our spine and up to the crown of our head. Along this channel are placed additional channel networks called cakras. These cakras are associated with major aspects of our anatomy - for example our throat, heart, solar plexus, and in turn these aspects of our anatomy are related to aspects of our human nature.
According to the literature of kundalini yoga our experience of these centers is limited due to knots which restrict the flow of energy into these centers. Three knots are particuarly important. The knot of Brahma which restricts the center at the base of the spine. The knot of Vishnu which restricts the heart center and the knot of Rudra which restricts the center between the eyebrows. These knots form an important framework in yogic thinking and the stages toward enlightenment are articulated in terms of breaking through these knots in the yogic classic the Hatha Yoga Pradipika as well as in some of the yoga upanishads. Specifically, four stages of progress are described:

arambha

ghata

parichaya

nishpatti

Arambha is associated with breaking the knot of Brahma and the awakening of kundalini.

Ghata is associated with breaking the knot of Vishnu and and with internal absorption.

Parichaya the absorption deepens and in

nishpatti the knot of Rudra is pierced and the kundalini may ascend to the center at the crown of the head. In this state transcendence is integrated and, according to the yogic liteature, the yogi has nothing more to attain.

Putting these elaborate physiological decriptions aside, the goal of kundalini yoga is the same as the goal of any legimitate spiritual practice: To be liberated from the limited bounds of the self-centered and alienated ego. In kundalini yoga this is associated with internal manifestations of the kundalini but the external manifestations should be similar to any other legitiimate spiritual practice.

So does everyone agree that kundalini awakening is necessary for enlightenment?

The view that kundalini awakening is necessary for enlightenment is held in the diverse literature of Kashmir Shaivism and in other Hindu Tantric literature. It is found in the literature of the Hatha Yogis and the Nath Sampradaya. You will find similar views in many Buddhist Tantric works. In addition this view is held by recent spiritual figures such as Shri Ramakrishna, Swami Sivananda, Paramahamsa Yogananda and Swami Vivekananda and of course by contemporary kundalini yogins themselves.

Nevertheless there are some dissenters from this view. These include Sri Chinmoy, Da Free John and Gurdjieff. Dissent can take a number of different forms. For Gurjieff kundalini is associated only with a binding force that leads us to be more attached to the world. Such a view of kundalini is not entirely inaccurate but only reflects the functioning of kundalini in the lower energy centers. For Sri Chinmoy kundalini is an amplifying function that may make an individual more powerful but not more enlightened. From my perspective this also only addresses the impact of kundalini while it operates in the lower energy centers.

Da Free John (born Franklin Jones, a. k. a. Da Love Ananda) has a much more fundamental criticism of kundalini. As far as I understand his position, for him enlightenment cannot be the result of an experience; it is a cognitive transformation. Kundalini may evoke a wide variety of experiences but these are not in and of themselves enlightening. This is an interesting perspective but it seems to assume that the raising of kundalini is an experience in which an ego-consciousness experiences a separate object known as kundalini. Again, this view is consistent with the experience of kundalini in the lower energy centers in which the ego is detached from the movement of kundalini and kundalini experiences are precieved as separate from oneself. However, I would argue that as kundalini rises the ego-consciousness becomes infused in a more fundamental consciousness of cit-shakti-kundalini and this experience does in fact produce a fundamental cognitive change.

Finally, there are many other spiritual practices, such as Zen, Vipassana meditation that consider kundalini irrelevant. Some practitioners or even teachers of these paths, such as Jiyu Kennet, may have kundalini experiences but generally kundalini is not a pivotal part of these paths.

Can I use kundalini yoga simply to improve my health?

Yoga exercises which were traditionally used to purify the body in preparation for awakening the kundalini can also be used simply to improve the health. To practice techniques aimed at actively awakening kundalini with the goal of simply improving your health seems to be a misuse of these powerful techniques.

There are those that teach kundalini yoga principally emphasizing its benefits on health without much discussion of the spiritual benefits. This is how hatha yoga has been taught in the west for some time. The affect of this approach depends on the attitude of the student. There is certainly nothing wrong with trying to improve your health but there is a tension between awakening an energy that will ultimately burn up the ego and trying to shape that energy to simply fulfill an ego-oriented motive.

Is there any scientific basis for kundalini and the cakras? Do I really have to believe that all these cakras physically exist?

Research on kundalini is especially spotty. There is no compelling work to show that the system represents insights into actual human anatomy. But it's important to understand that kundalini and its network of channels and cakras is simply how yogins have chosen to explain their experience and that yogins from many cultures have arrived at similar, though not identical, concepts. The true physical mechanisms underlying these experiences may be very different from those described. Izaak Benthov has proposed a model to explain kundalini in terms of micro- motion in the brain. In this model experiences are associated with parts of the body, such as the heart, because the part of the brain associated with that part of the body is stimulated by micro-vibrations. His model is treated in ``The Kundalini Experience'' by Sannella referenced below. From a practical perspective the key thing is our subjective experience and that the roadmap of these subjective experiences has been mapped out.

Is Chinese qi gong a kind of kundalini yoga?

If there is any contemporary teaching that is even more diverse in approach than kundalini yoga it must be qi gong. As a result it is hard to compare kundalini yoga to qi gong. From my limited exposure to qi gong it is clear there are many qi gong practices that are identical to kundalini yoga practices. What is also clear is that may qi gong practitioners have reported experiences that are identical to those of kundalini yogins. In so far as each of these practices aims at eliminating blocks to the qi/prana energy then they share a common ground.

What about Tibetan Buddhism - has kundalini been known in Tibet?

Kundalini yoga in the Natha Sampradaya and Vajrayana in Tibetan Buddhism both take their origin from the Mahasiddhas who were active in India from the 8th century to the 12th century. Kundalini yoga practices formed the core of the teachings of a number of these Mahasiddhas and are strongly represented in both Tibetan Buddhist practices and contemporary kundalini yoga practices. Kundalini yoga was spoken of as ``Candali yoga'' by these Mahasiddhas and became known as gTummo rnal 'byor in Tibet. Candali yoga was a key practice of the famous Tibetan yogin Milarepa. The role of kundalini yoga in Tibetan Buddhism is discussed in more detail in the Kundalini Yogas FAQ.

Are there any other traditions that show awareness of kundalini?

If you believe that kundalini is at the basis of spiritual progress then every valid spiritual tradition must have some awareness of kundalini. Christianity (especially Quakerism and Pentecostalism), Sufism, Qabalistic mysticism, alchemy and magick all have literature which demonstrates some awareness of the kundalini process but these traditions are not, to this author's awareness, so open in their exposition of the techniques and so it is hard to judge the depth of understanding latent in these traditions. Nevertheless, the imagery is so unmistakable in these traditions that each must have, at least at one time, been conversant with the movement of kundalini.

So how do I awaken kundalini?

Indirectly kundalini can be awakened by devotion, by selfless service, or by intellectual enquiry. In these paths the blocks to the awakening of kundalini are slowly removed. Occasionally, individuals on these paths will experience a sudden awakening of kundalini but generally because the blocks are slowly and gently removed kundalini-like experiences evolve slowly in these paths.

Broadly speaking there are two radically different direct approaches to awakening kundalini. One approach requires initiation by a guru and relies upon a technique called shaktipat, or ``descent of shakti.'' It is variously called: Siddha Mahayoga, Kundalini Mahayoga or Sahaja Yoga (Spontaneous Yoga). These approaches are treated in the Siddha Mahayoga FAQ. The other approach uses intentional yogic techniques . The styles using intentional techniques include Mantra Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Laya Yoga or Kriya Yoga. These approaches are treated in the Kundalini Yogas FAQ .

Fundamentally the approach of Siddha Mahayoga and the Kundalini Yogas are different. In Siddha Mahayoga the guru awakens the kundalini and after that the core of the practice is the inactive and non-willful surrender to kundalini. In Kundalini Yogas the will is used to awaken the kundalini and to guide its progress. Clearly these are different approaches.
Nevertheless, elements of the each approach occur in the practices of the other. Siddha Mahayogins may use asanas, pranayamas and other hatha yoga practices. On the other hand gurus in Kundalini Yoga may give infusions of shakti to their students to help them at particular points in their practice.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using effort, in kundalini yogas, as opposed to the grace of the guru, in siddha mahayoga, to awaken kundalini?

Since every practitioner brings his own unique inclinations and obstacles to the practice of yoga it is very hard to generalize on this point. In terms of actually awakening kundalini gurus of Siddha Mahayoga claim that the kundalini is more easily and reliably awakened by the grace of the guru than by individual effort. In my limited experience I would agree. with this assertion. While not every long-term student of either practice necessarily shows signs of kundalini awakening it is amazing how many people have had instant awakenings of kundalini through initiation from siddha gurus.

In terms of encountering difficulties along the path the siddha gurus would also claim that fewer problems due to kundalini awakening, such as mental imbalance, are encountered by students of Siddha Mahayoga. Here I think the results are mixed. It seems to me that the guidance of the teacher in either Siddha Mahayoga or Kundalini Yoga is more a determining factor than which style of kundalini practice is employed.

Generally speaking each style of practice has its strengths and weakness. The strength of Siddha Mahayoga is the ease with which it awakens the kundalini. The weakness is that because the kundalini is so easily awakened by the guru students of Siddha Mahayoga often have completely undisciplined personal meditation practices. Time is spent instead to trying to recreate some of their initial experiences by following the guru around hoping for his or her grace Some people spend 20 or more years in this manner without ever developing an inner core of practice or experience.

The strength of the family of Kundalini Yogas is that the progress is at least apparently more under the control of the student of the yoga. These students seem more likely to have disciplined personal practices and more of an understanding of how the practice relates to their own experience.
Unfortunately for some students this leads to a fairly egotistical approach to their practice and ultimately the kundalini energy is used to bolster the ego rather than to merge the ego in bliss.

What are the signs of an awakened kundalini?

Briefly, according to classical literature the signs of an awakened kundalini can be grouped into: mental signs, vocal signs and physical signs. Mental signs can include visions that range from ecstatically blissful to terrifyingly frightful. Vocal signs can include spontaneous vocal expressions that range from singing or reciting mantras to make various animals sounds such as growling or chirping. Physical signs include trembling, shaking and spontaneously performing hatha yoga postures and pranayamas.

From a more subjective perspective the more pleasant experiences associated with a kundalini awakening may include: waves of bliss, periods of elation, glimpses of transcendental consciousness. The less pleasant experiences associated with a kundalini awakening may include: trembling, sharp aches in areas associated with the cakras, periods of irrational anxiety, sudden flashes of heat.

Are these methods of awakening kundalini dangerous? What about Gopi Krishna's books?

If we take the psychological perspective and view kundalini as the power latent in our unconscious then it is easy to understand that awakening this force is going to bring a greater amount of unconscious material into our consciousness. Even in the best of circumstances this is likely to be uncomfortable and if an individual is barely coping with his unconscious even under normal circumstances then awakening kundalini may push the individual over into psychosis. This phenomenon has been documented many times.

Forceful methods of awakening kundalini pose additional dangers. Because quite forceful methods can be used to awaken kundalini these techniques themselves are potentially physically and mentally disruptive. An individual named Gopi Krishna awakened his kundalini by doing unguided meditation on his crown cakra. His life after awakening was both blessed by ecstatic bliss and tormented by physical and mental discomfort. Eventually his experience stabilized. He wrote down his experiences in a recently re-released autbiography entitled ``Living with Kundalini.'' Gopi Krishna's autobiography appears to be an honest representation of his experiences but it is only one extreme datapoint in the panorama of experience on kundalini yoga. It represents dangers in forceful unguided practice but it is not representative of a typical practicioner's experience.

But even if kundalini is dangerous, isn't it a faster way to enlighenment?

First of all it may be useful to observe that there is no technique currently known on earth that appears to be rapidly catapulting large number of individuals toward enlightenment. Because kundalini yogas deal so directly with a powerful enlightening force it seems natural that they would be ``faster'', but there appears to be alot of tortoise and hare phenomena at work with newbie kundalini yogins. Many people begin kundalini yogas, have strong initial experiences and then become frightened. Many who perservere through this initial phase become distracted by the energy and focus on temporal and phenomenal applications of the energy.

There have been many scandals among kundalini yoga teachers - particularly sexual scandals. Is there a correlation between sexual scandals and kundalini yoga practice?

There have been scandals regarding the teachers of many paths, both spiritual and non-spiritual ; however, it is probably fair to say that kundalini yogins have had more than their share. Since the first publication of these frequently-asked-questions in 1994 more than one well-known kundalini yoga teacher has been implicated in having clandestine affairs with students and has been asked to step down from his position as spiritual leader as a result.

An advanced kundalini yogin is typically a powerful charismatic individual who has the ability to directly influence the minds of others. Westerners often mistake this power as a sign of enlightenment and allow such teachers liberties as a result.

In addition it is quite common for kundalini yoga to temporarily accentuate the sex drive. This period requires extra discipline. Finally, kundalini yoga is closely associated with tantrism and sex is often used in conjunction with tantric practice. Where sex is used there is of course the opportunity for misuse or abuse.

If my kundalini is awakened will I need to change my lifestyle?

It's hard to have your cake and eat it too. If you awaken kundalini in order to change and enrich your life it's reasonable to expect you may need to change your lifestyle as a result. The recommendations of both classical literature and experience is that sleep and diet will need to be moderated otherwise severe discomfort may arise. Furthermore without moderating sexual activity and physical work it will be hard to experience much success with kundalini. The extent that these elements of your life need to change depends on the nature of the individual. While genuine mental imbalances arising from kundalini are rare nearly every kundalini yogin will find periods when one needs to be especially sensitive to needs for sleep, quiet and diet

Introduction by Aleran
Throughout the ages humanity has sought out the prophecies of the spiritually gifted to instil a clear hope and vision into life. During this time many prophecies come to us trying to lead us in many different directions.
